Special Announcement: Project Wall Reception and Studio Sale this Sunday, July 9th!

Come visit us this Sunday in the studio!

You are cordially invited to IS Projects this Sunday from 4PM to 6PM to celebrate the the work on our Project Wall.

The works on display were all produced by artists who have spent some time here at IS Projects within the last year. All of the featured artists have recently wrapped up their experiences in some of our most beloved programs. Fola Akinde and Tainá Rocha have both completed internships and Marco Caridad and Oskar Msellati have both completed the Key Holder Residency. All four of these artists use the printed image as a foundation for exploring themselves and the world they’re moving through. They explore the built environment, cultural norms and customs, mythologies old and new, and the ways we construct and are constructed by these structures.

We will be in the studio celebrating these works with drinks, snacks, and good company. This event will be simultaneous with a pop-up studio sale, which you can learn more about below.

You are welcome to come unannounced, but we encourage you to RSVP here so we are make sure to have enough snacks and bevs.

Stay out of the rain and in the loop!

We’re right in the middle of the summer. Here in Miami, it’s hot, it’s raining, the plants are green, the ocean’s blue, and there’s a million and one things to do. We’re having the best time making prints and books at the studio between openings and summer art-related road trips.

There’s no shortage of wonderful work to see this month in South Florida, so if you’re looking to stay cool, maybe put these on your calendar?

  • You can see some brilliant work by Donna Ruff in her solo exhibition Terra Incognita at the Deering Estate until August 31st. We are incredibly grateful to have been able to work with Donna to produce many of the gorgeous screenprints of archival images which are on view in this exhibition.

  • A dear friend of the studio, Luke Jenkins of In Bloom Studio, has a solo exhibition of his own on view at the Coral Springs Museum of Art. The exhibition, Consumption, is on view through the summer. In Bloom Studio has been absolutely essential to the completion of so many of our projects (and the construction of many of our walls and wacky wood structures) over time, so we were delighted to be able to help Luke explore some of the possibilities of printmaking for this show.

  • And if you’d like to come to an opening reception, we’ve got one coming up fast! At the end of July, please join us at Studio 18 in Pembroke Pines for the opening of Chance Encounters, an exhibition we have curated of portfolio exchanges. This started with the kick off of our portfolio exchange program with our first annual IS Projects Portfolio Exchange, Under the Sun, and has grown to include a handful of exchanges we’ve borrowed from folks we love and a special exchange organized for this exhibition by a group of artists with studios at Studio 18. The opening reception is Friday, July 28th from 7-9PM. Keep an eye out for an announcement about a live performance being planned for the opening.

Will we see you there?

The new workshops are out!

We’ve got all new workshops published on our Classes + Events Page for July, August, and September. There are some tried-and-true classics and some brand new special offerings. Head over to our website to see them all! We’d particularly like to highlight these two, though:

  • Print Club: Pochoir with Sammi McLean: Saturday, July 8th, 10AM-12PM

Pochoir is a fantastic low-tech addition to anyone’s toolbelt. “Pochoir” is just French for “stencil”, but if you’d like to learn the ins and out of making effective stencils and getting great results with them (plus a little background info and all the essentials print skills involved to produce small editions with multiple layers this way), this demo is a must. It is followed by a special Open Studio Session from noon to 4PM that is only available to the demo participants. Don’t forget that all Print Club demo + open studio days are 50% off to Print Club members!

  • Longstitch Binding with Brooke Frank: Saturday, July 29th, 12PM-3PM

Longstitch is one of our favorite bindings to teach at IS Projects. You don’t need any bookbinding experience at all to learn how to make these books, and they always come out looking sharp and luxurious. This binding results in beautiful exposed stitching into a soft leather cover, resulting in a book with a flexible spine which lays flat when open. No glue required!

Members Only

We’ve had a wave of incredible new folks become Studio Members this month (hello! thank you!) and we would love to see that continue. If you’ve been looking for a good time to come in and get acquainted with the presses, there’s really no time like the present.

We have plenty of availability for assisted and unassisted studio time, a whole summer’s worth of Open Studio Sessions are soon to be announced, and Member’s Only Monthly Studio Passes published on our website from now through November. If you’re working toward big things, definitely check out the passes — if we’re open, the pass gets you in!

The discounts on our scheduled workshops and custom private workshops just sweeten the deal.

Apply to be an Intern or Key Holder

Summer Intern Angelina Parrino wearing all the right PPE and preparing to bust into a bucket of haze remover so she can freshen up our screens. The Coveted Gold Raincoat is definitely essential.

All the things we do here are made possible by a wonderful network of artists with all different backgrounds and goals. Most folks who want to get involved from the inside and be a part of our day-to-day operations end up applying to participate in either our Key Holder Residency or our Internship Program.

Our Key Holder residents need to be able to work independently in our facilities. They trade the equivalent of 4 hours of work per week in exchange for 24/7 studio access, a flat file drawer, and their own shiny studio key.

Our Interns work a total of 120 hours, learning many of our most important studio skills on the clock so that they can assist us with events, projects, and studio maintenance, and are granted 120 hours of studio access during our open hours and are paid a stipend of $1500.

Both programs put these artists right at the center of Miami’s vibrant print, book, and paper community. If you want to make art and make friends here at IS Projects and you’re interested in getting started this fall, get ready — applications for both programs are due on July 15th.

Don’t hesitate and don’t wait! Application instructions are linked above.

Artists’ Book Feature

For this month’s artists’ book feature, we wanted to put Convergence by Michelle A M Miller in the spotlight.

Convergence was produced at IS Projects in 2020 as a part of the Existent Books publishing program. The book touches multiple disciplines and utilizes a wild number of the processes we’re best at here at IS Projects as well as a few that we don’t. It involved letterpress and screenprinting, both in algae-based ink. It has a 3D-printed slipcase and laser-cut pages, a drum leaf binding and a foil-stamped cover. Michelle even managed to incorporate an accompanying musical composition, which can be heard on her website.

More importantly, Convergence offers a stunning insight into art’s power to give the things we care about a life beyond their own. To say that Convergence documents Miskitu — an endangered language of which Michelle’s mother is one of few remaining native speakers — is to understate the role of Miskitu in the book. In it, we see words from this language in use. They take on a meaningful role in Michelle’s own exploration of the ideas and interests that motivate her movement through the world, and we come to understand the words through their context. The words, in essence, aren’t just recorded, they’re meaningfully used.

Michelle has just returned to South Florida from the Artist’s Book Residency Grant at Women’s Studio Workshop. We can’t wait to see how it has shaped her practice, and how she will continue to shape the world of artists’ books in the future.

Cool off by heating things up in the studio!

Summer is here, the AC is blasting, and if you’re looking to print, the presses are ready and waiting! We want to see folks in here all summer making things.

We have plenty of availability for Assisted and Unassisted studio rentals — you pay for exactly what you need to do your project or try new things during our business hours, and our June Open Studio Sessions drop first thing this June on our Classes + Events page if you’re looking to come in on the weekends and evenings!

MEMBERS MARK YOUR CALENDARS: JUNE 23RD: Member Night from 6-9PM.

  • June’s Member Night is hosted by Ingrid, who will be chatting with folks about all the geeky print things they might want to pick her brain about. There will be drinks and snacks, and attendees are invited to spend their time making art. This event is free for all registered IS Projects Studio Members so sign up ASAP if you want in! If you’re already a member, we’d love it if you’d RSVP.

If you’ve got big goals and want to devote lots of time to the studio this summer, we have month long studio passes available for June and July. Each pass covers unlimited access to available equipment during our business hours and to our posted Open Studio Sessions at no additional cost, and a discounted rate on one-on-one instruction through Assisted Studio Rental ($45 an hour, usually $65!)

All of these forms of studio access are a part of our Studio Membership program, and there are many more benefits to membership. Check out or memberships at the link above to learn more, and if you have any questions, you can always shoot Brooke an email at brooke@isprojectsfl.com to learn more. It’ll be the highlight of her day.

And of course, if you’re already a member, get in touch ASAP about your print/book/paper dreams so we can make them come true.

Come sling some ink in our upcoming workshops

We’re still cooking up our next batch of courses, so we’ve only got a few things on the calendar right now, but they are not to be missed.

You don’t need any prior experience to succeed in the courses we’re offering right now, and by then end of each one, you’ll be ready to work independently whatever process you’ve learned. These courses offer you a serious deep dive into a new process with a very knowledgeable and experienced guide. We are particularly excited to spotlight Sammi McLean’s upcoming Collagraph workshop on Sunday, June 4th. Much of collagraph depends upon trial and error, and Sammi has done a lot of that experimentation herself to great effect. Learning from her will set you up in this super versatile process with a really great sense of what works, what doesn’t, and how to get the prints you want from all kinds of textures and materials. This course will offer a massive jump-start to beginners and certainly a huge amount of growth to everyone else.

We’ve got a few other really exciting courses coming up. Check them out here:

  • Print Club: Botanical Painting with Jenny Kiker of Living Pattern

Taught by special guest instructor Jenny K, this brief 2 hour Saturday morning demo will guide participants through making beautiful, intuitive black ink botanical paintings from life. This is an easy and fun opportunity to get familiar with some of the most essential concepts of composing images for printmaking methods like screenprinting and relief, though they’ll be useful to folks working in any media. This demo is followed by a special Open Studio Session that is only available to the demo participants. Don’t forget that all Print Club demo + open studio days are 50% off to Print Club members!

  • Screenprinting Intensive with Ingrid Schindall (4 weeks, once a week)

By the end of this screenprinting course, you’ll have been taught all of the essential steps required to produce an edition of multi-layered screenprints. Ingrid will be sharing lots of her most effective tips, strategies, and insights for getting exactly what you need out of this process and out of our facilities. All you need to bring is your enthusiasm and an idea you’re excited about! This course even comes with an invite to purchase seats in any Open Studio Sessions (usually exclusive to members) which occur between it’s first and last meeting date so you can get some extra practice in.

Key Holder Residents: Hellos and Goodbyes

An image of the work we’ve installed on the Project Wall for this summer. It features works by outgoing Key Holder residents Marco Caridad and Oskar Msellati, as well as former interns Tainá Rocha and Fola Akinde.

It’s not just the beginning of summer for us, its the beginning of a few exciting new relationships for the studio, too! We received some truly fantastic applications to the summer session of the IS Projects Key Holder residency and we are happy to announce that our summer residents will be in the studio with us starting in June. Once our summer session has started, you’re likely to find our two new residents — Haley Smith-Moncrieff and Katelyn Kopenhaver — as well as current resident Yuko Yamaguchi, who will continue her spring residency through the summer. If you see these artists out and about or here in the studio, be sure to congratulate them!

At the same time, our other spring residents will be exiting our Key Holder program. They’ve all got super interesting summer plans — there are new practices to explore, places to go, and projects to bring to life. A hearty thank you to Charlisa Montrope, Nat Sassine, Oskar Msellati, or Marco Caridad for spending so much time here with us, making great work here, and for the important parts they’ve played in all the things we do here. It’s been such a joy, and we are hoping they’ll stay in our orbit for a long time to come.

Artists’ Book Feature

For this month’s artists’ book feature, we wanted to put Devoted by Beth Sheehan in the spotlight.

Devoted was the second book we published through out Existent Books publishing project in the Spring of 2016. This whole book was printed on our Vandercook SP15 with hand-burned pressure plates and hand-set lead type, all pulled together in a drum leaf binding. The book pulls text from obituaries and reflects on the ways in which our memories — particularly, our memories of each other — are reshaped and distorted by time and context.

Beth’s interest in memory, which is a product of her own lack of episodic memory, is still a major focus in her work today. If, by chance, you find yourself in Birmingham, Alabama at some point this June, you can see how some of the central themes of Devoted have bloomed in her practice in the time since, as she will be one of four artists in an upcoming exhibition at Ground Floor Contemporary called Two Lies and a Truth, opening on June 3rd. Exploring the messy relationship between fact and fiction within and beyond the studio, the show is likely to be especially exciting to lovers of books and prints. Beth’s work will be accompanied by work from Kyle Holland (a wonderful artist with a book and print foundation who currently teaches at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa) as well as work by Ingrid Schindall and Brooke Frank (surely you know who they are, don’t you?)

April 2023 Newsletter

There’s a lot to do, but we’re doing it all for you, so come through!

There’s so much happening right now and we are so excited about all of it — but the best part of working hard is sharing the joy. If you love the work we do, there are a lot of ways you can support us, but it mostly boils down to this: sign up, show up, and take home the art that you love.

AT IS PROJECTS:

  • THIS SUNDAY, APRIL 30TH: Project Wall Closing/Studio Sale from 3PM-5PM.

This will be the last chance to see these works installed together before we start the next install. There will be drinks and snacks and additionally, a sale happening on prints, handmade paper, and more! Free to attend, please RSVP through our website to help us with our snack estimate. Featured image is Nicholas Waguespack’s Skin, 2022, Screenprint on textured vinyl, 22x18"

  • MAY 12TH: Member Night from 6-9PM.

May’s Member Night is hosted by Ingrid, who will be chatting with folks about all the geeky print things they might want to pick her brain about. There will be drinks and snacks, and attendees are invited to spend their time making art. This event is free for all registered IS Projects Studio Members so sign up ASAP if you want in! If you’re already a member, we’d love it if you’d RSVP.

  • MAY 13TH: Artists Open from 11AM-6PM

Organized by Fountainhead Arts, participating artists all over Miami will be opening their studios and inviting everyone else in! No RSVP required. Brooke Frank and Ingrid Schindall have private studios within IS Projects that will be open throughout the day, and there may be work to see from some of our resident artists, too!

  • If you want to stay on top of upcoming studio events, you can now find them on the homepage of our website! We’ve reworked it a little and we think you’ll love it. If you want to explore more, just visit our Classes + Events page.

OUT IN THE WORLD:

  • MAY 18TH: Opening reception for Jason Seife’s solo exhibition at PAMM.

We worked closely with Jason on these prints for his show at Unit London. The prints have just been released for purchase, and it’s one of our favorite commissioned print projects to date. Fourteen screen printed layers laser-cut to reveal papel amate. We’re really excited to see his work handled with such care at PAMM here in his hometown.

  • MAY 6TH and 7TH: Seattle Art Book Fair

You can find Ingrid at the IS Projects table in Seattle next weekend making friends and finding loving new homes for the books we represent. We have a lot of books worth hauling to the opposite corner of the continental US — don’t miss it if you’re over there!

Come and make it

The folks who make things here are always challenging and exciting us. We love the constant stream of new ideas to explore, new problems to solve, and even new takes on the basics that make up our daily life at IS Projects.

Our Studio Members are a key source of all of those joys. Our members all come in with different goals — they come with personal projects, business ideas, technical skills they want to acquire, fun silly dreams, and/or rigorous creative practices they want to deepen and expand — but whatever their differences, they have a need for print/book/paper in common, and we are really thrilled to be a part of that.

If you have any print/book/paper goals of your own and you think IS Projects might be the right place to explore them, explore our Studio Membership programs. Any questions not answered by our website can be directed to Brooke at brooke@isprojectsfl.com — that email will be a joy, not a bother!

To sweeten the deal, we have released Members Only Studio Passes for May and June, and we’ll have up a bunch of future months posted on our Classes + Events page soon! Each month-long studio pass allows you unlimited access to available equipment during our business hours, free access to our posted Open Studio Sessions, and a discounted rate on one-on-one instruction through Assisted Studio Rental ($45 an hour, usually $65!)

These passes are limited to 4 per month, so if you know you’ll want to buy one to work on a big project down the line, you can buy your pass now! If you’re not a member yet, you can buy your pass now and start your membership later. Talk to us and we can figure it out.

Learn before you leap: Upcoming Workshops

This round, we’re bringing you courses which offer you deep immersion into each topic you could learn. Arrive ready to learn and you’ll leave with a functional understanding of each topic, ready to work independently, and having made something really cool to get yourself started.

Extra special: our next workshop happens to start on May 6th, which is Print Day in May! This day is meant to be a celebration of all kinds of printmaking and there is no better way to celebrate than by taking this weekend-long cyanotype course taught by Lorraine Cruz here at IS Projects. Cyanotype works on all kinds of different materials — paper and fabric especially — and lends itself well to making prints from found objects, drawings, cut paper, photos, and more. It’s very versatile, easy to adjust for limited studio spaces, and you can’t argue with that blue! All you need is a great introduction to get the most out of this technique, and Lorraine is sure to deliver.

We’ve got a few other really exciting courses coming up. Check them out here:

Artists’ Book Feature

This month we wanted to share this gorgeous book we made with the artist Christian Feneck in 2019 as a part of our Existent Books publishing initiative. Feneck started making paintings while pursuing his Master of Architecture degree at the University of Florida and has been exploring the way these two disciplines interact in his practice ever since.

The Unmade Room is Feneck’s first artists’ book but has proven to be a beautiful expansion of his practice. It dovetailed beautifully with the work he had been making, and gave him a chance to explore some new ideas he’s still cultivating today. This book has been really attractive to folks with interests across and beyond the disciplines it engages, and has been collected by the libraries at Tufts, and Virginia Commonwealth University, and most recently Harvard, as well as a bunch of other places we’ve been thrilled to say it’s found a home.

We’re really proud of this book, and it’s been incredible to see that it’s been flying off the shelves here, and onto more prestigious ones out in the world. It was produced in a limited edition and once they’re gone they’re gone, so if you’ve had your eye on this one, there’s no time like the present to act!

Additionally, if you’d like to learn more about his work and find yourself in South Florida, a solo exhibition of Christian Feneck’s work can be found at Bailey Contemporary Arts in Pompano Beach until May 24th, with a reception on May 5th. The exhibition is called Borrowed Light and it is not to be missed!

March 2023 Newsletter

It’s a time to come together here in the studio

With an outrageous amount of activities and events behind us after only 3 months of 2023, we’re excited to focus on more in-house events and opportunities coming up in April and May.

We’re excited to host a closing reception for our current arrangement on the project wall. Please join us Sunday April 30th from 3 to 5 to celebrate the works of Lisa Haque, Nat Sassine, and Nicholas Waguespack. We’ll have snacks, bevs, and good conversation a plenty! This is also a great time to stop by and see the studio if you haven’t been to our (still relatively) new location here in Miami or if you haven’t been by in a while.

We’re also pleased to announce our newly released workshop schedule for the second quarter 2023. We have several new workshops, with a focus on long form evening workshops to go deep into each subject and promote sustainable habits around your art practice.

We’re also very excited to be participating in Fountainhead’s Artist’s Open Studio May 11. Come by from 11am to 6pm to see the work of our founder, Ingrid Schindall, and our Education and Artist Relations manager, Brooke Frank. Did you know we each have our own personal studios within IS Projects? This would be a great time to come by and take a look!

We had a great time hosting the Printmaker’s Playground for SGCI this March. Thanks to everyone who came and to Joseph Velasquez for putting this together!

O, Miami Festival

IS Projects, Nocturnal Press, and Ingrid all have a long standing symbiotic relationship with O, Miami Poetry Festival. If you haven’t encountered the festival before, it’s a month long festival with the simple mission of finding ways for everyone in Miami-Dade County to encounter a poem in the month of April.

We’ve been collaborating through multiple projects since 2016 and have been printing the festival totes since 2018. This year, Ingrid has turned the flub totes of years past into paper pulp and is popping up at events throughout the month to make paper with festival goers. The next event is on April 26th for the ZipOdes finale at Viscaya from 6-9pm

Be sure to check out the O, Miami website for more events and to sign up! The totes are free but you have to visit an event to get one!

Monthly studio passes are here!

Limited to 4 passes per month, our monthly pass (or golden ticket as we have been lovingly calling it) allows IS Projects Studio Members the opportunity to come in and work independently on their own projects during our normal weekday business hours as well as any open studio sessions this month without any additional studio rental or open studio session fees. Upcoming Workshops, Open Studios, and Events!

February 2023 Newsletter

The time has come!

Tropic Bound Artists’ Book Fair has arrived in Miami’s Design District. Book people: there is not a minute to spare. We are so excited to see you here, and so ready to show you what all of this work has amounted to.

This Thursday, February 16th, we kick everything off at 10AM with two fantastic shuttle tours exploring Miami’s literary arts scene, followed by the Symposium from 4-6PM, followed by the fair’s Welcome Party! All of the Thursday events require you to register via Eventbrite, so click through if you are reading this over your morning cup of coffee and trying to plan your day.

From February 17th through 19th, you can expect to find artists’ books from all over the world, in the loving care of some of the most committed champions of artists’ book out there. Artists, dealers, publishers, and more will be sitting at every table with a thoughtful selection of books that they love, showing them off, selling them, and in many cases, encouraging you to touch the art. IS Projects will have a table, of course, so be sure to swing by and say hello!

The Tropic Bound team has worked incredibly hard to bring this thing to life. We are all so ridiculously excited to share this experience and all of this wonderful work in this city. Come see it for yourself.

Visit TropiC Bound’s website at tropicboundfair.org for more information

Small blue paper rectangles have been draped over a clothesline which stretches through the image to a pole. The pole also holds a fire extinguisher. In the background, you can see a board shear and several type cabinets.

So many exciting things have been made here in the last month, but this (literally) Medieval paper drying system is proof that we’re starting to (literally) get our feet wet with papermaking in the new space. Keep an eye out — we’ll get our papermaking facilities up and running before you know it!

Member March

The only problem we have with our membership program right now is that it isn’t big enough. We are having a fantastic time working with our current studio members on all of the things they want to make, and we want more! We want more people to sign up for memberships, and we want our members to come in and print more often. In an effort to motivate more art making via carrot (as opposed to stick), we have decided to declare March to be Member March: a month-long membership drive which will include sweet deals and cool prizes!

For the sake of having as much fun as possible, we will be announcing all of the Member March offerings at the very beginning of March. Keep an eye out!

That said, there are two great reasons to join now: The deadline to apply for our first annual IS Projects Portfolio Exchange is February 28th, and if you are don’t fall into one of the invited artists categories outline on our website, then you’ll have to become a studio member to apply! Additionally, our quarterly members-only Shop Talk is coming up on March 3rd, and it’s a great opportunity to meet other folks who make their art here and get real excited about all the parts of prints and books that keep you excited to make them.

SGCI is coming to IS Projects!

Yeah, no big deal. We’re hosting an SGCI satellite event in March. Totally casual. It’s just the largest organization of printmakers in the nation. The annual conference will be held remotely this year, but there are in-person satellite events nation wide, and IS Projects is the place to be if you want to sling some ink in the state of Florida with the SGCI folks! We are so honored to have this opportunity, and absolutely cannot wait to share all of the wild things that this “carnival of ink” will entail. You will really just have to see this for yourself.

A big thank you to Joseph Velazquez for pulling this all together.

Workshops and Open Studios for February and March!

There’s not much left of February, but we’re moving into spring with some energy. You can take Charlisa Montrope’s weekend intensive in Watercolor Monotype on February 24th and 25th. March brings two great opportunities to jump right into the deep end with Ingrid: You can take her beloved weekend Screen Printing Intensive, which starts Friday, March 24th, or if you have an idea for a print project that you just need a little more support to execute, you might check out her four week, once a week Advanced Printmaking course. There’s only one more Print Club day on the calendar right now (though you can expect a fresh workshop drop in March!), and it’s Simple Bindings with Sammi McLean. Print Club members get a 50% discount on the Print Club days. Lastly, If you want to learn a whole lot about color, come in for Brooke Frank’s three hour color crash course Color Mixing for Pritnmakers. It’s going to be real geeky in the best way.

January 2023 Newsletter

We’re counting down the days until Tropic Bound!

There’s less than a month remaining between now and the first day of the inaugural Tropic Bound Artists’ Book Fair here in Miami, and we couldn’t be more excited. Whether you make artists’s books, collect them, or just think they’re cool, you will not want to miss this.

The fair, which is taking over Paradise Plaza in the Design District, kicks off on February 16th with tons of different ways to explore the intersection of art, books, and literature. During the Welcome Day, there will be two shuttle tours traveling to some must-see Miami artists’ book hot spots, and a symposium featuring keynote speaker Tia Blassingame and Panel: Beyond Florida Man. Of course, to set the celebratory tone for the rest of the fair, there will also be a fabulous Welcome Party from 6PM to 8PM on the rooftop garden terrace. You must RSVP to these events via Eventbrite, and spots are filling up fast, so click through to get more details and save your spot!

From February 17th through 19th, the venue will be packed with exhibitors from around the world! Each exhibitor’s table will have a unique selection of artists’ books to explore, all of which will be for sale. This fair presents an excellent opportunity to meet artists who make books and a bunch of people who champion those books. Exhibitors and book lovers from abroad have been booking flights and making big plans for their time here in Miami, and we wanted to be sure you know that you’re invited, too. If you’re local, be sure to carve out at least a day to visit the fair, and if you’re not, it’s certainly not too late to plan a weekend getaway. It’s 81°F here in Miami today and there is no shortage of great places to explore.

Tropic Bound is being directed by a team of three women who share a deep love for artists and artists’ books. Sarah Michelle Rupert (co-director of SPF and Director of the Girls’ Club Collection) and Cristina Favretto (Head of Special Collections at the University of Miami) are collaborating with Ingrid Schindall (you know her, right?) to create this incredible opportunity for the world of artists’ books and the South Florida literary arts scene to grow more deeply interconnected. As you can imagine, IS Projects is very involved in Tropic Bound. You can expect to see folks from our team running around at the event, and we will of course have a table among the other exhibitors, at which you can expect to find books we’ve helped to produce as well as books by other South Florida artists. If you would like us to consider selling your work at our table, you are welcome to apply for representation via IS Projects here.

Visit TropiC Bound’s website at tropicboundfair.org for more information

Brooke Frank and Former IS Projects intern Khanh Ho demonstrate Suminagashi marbling at a recent event. Suminagashi Marbling will also be a part of the February 9th Event we are working with MOAD MDC on.

MOAD MDC x IS Projects: Make friends and make prints!

The Museum of Art and Design at Miami Dade College is enjoying a period of nomadic programming as their home, the Freedom Tower in downtown Miami, is undergoing renovation. We are very excited to announce that as part of their 2023 offsite programming as a Museum Without Boundaries, we will be hosting an event with them here at IS Projects on Thursday, February 9th from 6-9PM. After a few brief demonstrations on suminagashi marbling and letterpress printing, participants will marble their own paper and pull their own prints with the guidance and support of our team. Participants will be able to make small prints with their own unique message on our Write-A-Sign press, and will have the opportunity to print on their larger marbled paper from moveable wood type on our showcard press. Light refreshments will be served.

Tickets to this program are limited, so please visit MOAD’s website to read more about the event and to get your ticket!

Workshops and Open Studios for February and March!

Things are in full swing over here! There are lots of great opportunities to learn new skills before the end of March. In February, we’ve got a weekend course on Watercolor Monotype lead by our Keyholder Resident Charlisa Montrope. Ingrid will be offering two courses this quarter for folks looking for a deep dive into print: We’ve got a Screen Printing Intensive (a fan-favorite, not to be missed if you want to learn the essential screen printing skills you need to succeed!) and an Advanced Printmaking course starting in March. The Advanced Printmaking course allows participants to work on their own independent projects using our facilities, and with the help of Ingrid and their peers to solve all of the unexpected print problems that will inevitably come up! Also in March, Brooke Frank will be offering a one day workshop called Color Mixing for Pritnmakers in which participants will learn and apply some very detailed color theory and materials information to level up their control of color! The workshop will be taught through monoprinting, but the knowledge shared in it is applicable to most print and painting applications. And of course, there are two more Print Club days coming up, lead by Sammi McLean — one on Pattern Block Printing and one on Simple Bindings. Print Club members get a 50% discount on the Print Club days — be sure to check that out!

Pals Past and Present: Want to be a part of our first annual IS Projects Portfolio Exchange?

One of our favorite things to do is to share art we love with folks who will love it. We do this every day in tons of different ways, but we thought it would be exciting and fun to organize an annual IS Projects portfolio exchange starting this year! We have been instrumental in organizing and executing a few portfolio exchanges in the past (most recently Extra Pulp in 2019), but this time, we wanted to focus on the folks who have made IS Projects possible from within. We started this project with our studio members in mind, but for this first year, we are additionally inviting a long list of people who have been instrumental to our programming and operations throughout our history to participate. We would love to include work from artists who’ve done residencies with us, interned with us, taught here, and worked here!

The exchange title is Under the Sun, and you can explore the participation guidelines on this page on our website, which can also be found under the “Opportunities” tab! If you would like to participate and don’t fall into any of the categories identified in the “Who is invited:” section of the page, there’s only one way in: Become a studio member and then sign up to participate in the exchange before February is over! The deadline to confirm your desire to participate in the exchange is February 28th, so everyone’s got just over a month to make a plan.

Please reach out to Brooke Frank with any questions via email at brooke@isprojectsfl.com

December 2022 Newsletter

Goodbye 2022, you were somehow our wildest year yet, full of challenges but also full of hope.

This year started with a wedding, an intense search for a new home, and a herculean effort to pack our entire studio and move it to a new city. When we found out in late 2021 that FATVillage was set to be redeveloped, it set into motion a seemingly endless and daunting list of possibilities: do we stay in Fort Lauderdale, do we move further south, do we move anywhere else, do we take some time off, how can we keep things running while the presses are on pallets, on and on. The support and guidance that we received from friends and colleagues allowed us to find the path that made the impossible task seem slightly more possible and we will forever be indebted to everyone who stuck with us and helped us out throughout 2022.

We made the decision to move to Miami based on pragmatic business matters (where could we find an affordable space that would have the visibility within an arts ecosystem to support us) and also on aspirational ideals (what physical location for the studio could help us bring printmaking to folks looking to engage with the medium). We are so grateful at the receptiveness and excitement that has come along with the move and are astounded by the quantity and quality of fine art printmaking projects and institutional collaborations that have come our way in just a few short months of being just a few short miles closer. Basically all of this to say, we’re very happy in our new home and incredibly grateful to everyone who has come through the doors or sent positive energy our way (sometimes even braving 95 to make the journey).

So thank you, sincerely, for making this year possible. We hope your year was if not less turbulent, then at least as interesting. Here’s to another year of printmaking in the Tropics. 2023 bring it on!

- Ingrid Schindall

We kicked off Miami Art Week with an intimate reception for the work on our project wall. Works made here in the studio by Johanna Boccardo, Charlisa Montrope, and Carol Todaro were warmly received by the folks in attendance.

HOLIDAY HOURS + LAST-MINUTE GIFT IDEAS

We love what we do here and we couldn’t be more excited to keep it up in 2023. That said, we are looking forward to a little bit of rest this holiday season. IS Projects will be closed on Friday, December 23rd and Friday, December 30th. We will otherwise be maintaining our usual studio hours until the new year.

The holidays are now in full swing, but if you’re as busy as we generally are, you may still have one or two more folks for whom you have not found the perfect gift just yet. We may be able to help! We have a small selection of prints and journals available for purchase in person, of course, but may we also suggest the gift of an IS Projects Studio Membership so that your loved one can spend the year working on all their dream projects? Or perhaps a seat in one of our workshops learning some fun new skills is more their speed? You could buy yourself a seat, too, and take it together if you want to guarantee it’s a good time! Of course, if you can also send these links to the folks who are shopping for you, give them a wink and a nudge, and remind them that it gets them out of having to wrap your gift. Sounds great, right?

First quarter 2023 workshops are out now!

This quarter, we have a very exciting selection of workshops to share. We are particularly excited to introduce Charlisa Montrope as an instructor. She will be leading our Introduction to Printmaking course, which starts in late January, as well as an as of yet unreleased one-day workshop on Watercolor Monotypes (a technique very essential to her own practice — keep an eye out for that special release!) We are also really pumped about offering Sammi McLean’s one day collagraph workshop, as Sammi’s own collagraphs are constantly blowing our minds. Also of particular note, Ingrid will be offering an Advanced Printmaking course starting in March. That course allows participants to work on their own independent projects using our facilities, and with the help of Ingrid and their peers to solve all of the unexpected print problems that will inevitable come up!

KEYS TO OUR HEART

There have been a ton of incredible artists coming and going since we moved to Miami, but we would like to take a moment to talk about our incredible Key Holder residents. Our Key Holder Residency started when we were in Fort Lauderdale, but has really been picking up steam here in our Miami location. To kick it off, we invited applications for a Special Session in 2022 which was not tethered to our typical quarterly application cycle, and we are so glad we did. Our Special Session residents, Nat Sassine and Charlisa Montrope, have been an absolute joy to have around. They have both been hard at work here at the studio on their respective projects, and have been at the helm of our budding weekend Open Studio Sessions. Nat and Charlisa will be with us through the end of January, and you can learn more about their work and the places you can see it by following along with them! Charlisa will also be teaching here in the upcoming months, so if you like her work, think about taking Introduction to Printmaking with her, or her soon-to-be-released Watercolor Monotype one day class!

Our Special Session may be coming to a close, but we are excited to announce that there will not be a gap in our residency schedule! Our Winter Session has already begun, and we are proud to announce that we have welcomed Oskar Msellati to the studio. Oskar is off to a great start here, and we can’t wait to see what he’ll make before he completes his residency at the end of February.

Oskar, Charlisa, and Nat will be facilitating more weekend Open Studio Sessions come 2023. The sessions are four hours long, cost $40, and are only available to our Studio Members. During the sessions, members are invited to come in and work on anything they know how to do safely in our studio space. All of the sessions will be available for purchase through the “Classes” page on our website once they are posted (the “Classes” page is accessible through our new “Learn+Make” tab). Keep an eye on our Instagram for that announcement in the new year!

If you’re a South Florida-based book and/or printmaker reading this and thinking that the Key Holder Residency sounds like a good time to you, be sure to check out the full program description on our website! The deadline to apply for the Spring Session is January 15th, so you have plenty of time to put that application together and get it over to us.

See that shaved head and peaceful face back there? That’s our beloved Fall Intern Nicholas Waguespack. They came to our Grand Opening with their friend, and it was love at first sight. Nick loved the presses, we loved nick and Nick’s application. It’s great when things like that work out.

THE BEST INTERNS AROUND

We would also like to take a moment to appreciate our wonderful interns in this newsletter. Our Fall 2022 interns are almost completely done with their hours, and we would say that we’re sad to see them go, except we’re sure they won’t be gone forever. Aliya Gordon, Nicholas Waguespack, and Lorraine Cruz have each shared 120 splendid hours with us. It’s been so rewarding to watch them grow and learn here, each figuring out what their studio super powers are, getting comfortable with their goals and dreams, and playing essential roles in some of our biggest recent projects. Thanks, Fall Interns, for letting us be a part of your journey!

Our Fall Interns have also been incredibly kind and helpful as they have passed the torch to our brand new crop of Winter Interns. We are very excited to welcome to the team three new and wonderful folks: Fola Akinde, Adana Garrote, and Kaila Gumbs. Our Winter Interns are off to a fantastic start. They have each already proven to be positive, curious, and enthusiastic about learning new skills and putting them into practice while working on our wide assortment of projects.

Our interns get to be a part of everything we do. Because we are such a small and nimble organization and because we do so many different things and wear so many hats ourselves, our interns get real-world hands-on experience with everything from producing large editions of screen prints with tons of layers, to doing research for essential arts administrative tasks. It’s a great opportunity to learn about lots of the different kinds of work involved in a career in the arts, and we pay our interns to learn it! The deadline to apply for our Spring Internship is January 15th, and the application is simple. Spread the word!

This is what we’re looking forward to next year

With next year right around the corner, we wanted to put this on your radar. Tropic Bound is an international artists’ book fair debuting here in Miami in February 2023. Ingrid is one of three people collaborating to bring this fair to life — she is working closely with Sarah Michelle Rupert, who is the Gallery Director at Girls’ Club Collection and Ingrid’s co-founder on SPF, and Cristina Favretto, who is the Head of Special Collections at the University of Miami. The fair runs from February 16th to 19th, kicks off with a symposium day, and revolves around upwards of 50 exhibitors from all over the world. Exhibitors are bringing the books they’re most excited to share, and we can’t wait to see them. This is a great opportunity to meet print and book folks from all over the place, to start or expand your own collection of artists’ books, and to get swept away in the generally immaculate vibes.

No need for sunscreen at SPF’22!

We have been counting down the days until 2022’s Small Press Fair since we returned the steamroller last year. Now that we have less than two weeks to go, we wanted to make sure you had it on your calendar, too!

If you are reading this and wondering: What steamroller? Sunscreen? What is this email even about? Isn’t this a printmaking newsletter? Then rest assured: if you love prints, books, and zines SPF’22 is not something you want to miss.

Co-founded by the unstoppable force of nature that is Sarah Michelle Rupert and our very own inimitable founder Ingrid Schindall, Small Press Fair is in its seventh year! It is the largest print/book/zine event in Broward County and it is totally free to attend. Exhibitors come from all over the country to meet other artists, publishers, collectors, and enthusiasts from all walks of life. This year, it’s bigger than ever, with the fair itself lasting for two whole days, and taking over MAD Artspace in Dania Beach, FL. This means that in addition to turning the fair into a weekend-long event (it was previously only one day), it is now indoors and totally air conditioned! Those of you who have attended or exhibited during previous, box fans-only SPF years know that this will be a huge boost to an already wildly fun experience. There will be a ton to see within those walls during SPF’22 — two fantastic solo print exhibitions by Martin Mazzora and Jesse Shaw, workshops and demos, cold beer, and of course, over 60 exhibitor tables bursting with art, books, buttons, and plenty of other things we can’t predict! Come see what other folks are making, pick up some really cool things for your own collection, and if you’re a book/zine/printmaker yourself, the space is nearly full so be sure to book yourself a space ASAP — register as an exhibitor.

“And the steam roller?”

Yes! There will be a steam roller! And yes, we will be using it to print oversized relief prints in the street! And the best part? It’s not too late to sign up and print your own. So perhaps more accurately, sunscreen is optional beyond your usual daily SPF. If you want to make a steamroller print, it might still be wise to put some on.

Read on for an outline of everything you’ll want to add to your calendar that’s happening here in the studio and out in the community that we have planned from now until 2023!

SPF’s look this year is brought to you by baghead!

September 2022 Newsletter

8 YEARS, ALREADY??

One thing I can say definitively about running a printmaking studio in South Florida is that it is never ever boring… ever. Therefore, it is really hard to believe that 8 years have passed since we first opened our doors to the public here and started practicing the line “hold the large sheets from corner to corner to avoid denting them.”

Year 8 has probably been the most intense year of all when we think about it

  • We found out at the end of October 2021 that our building in Fort Lauderdale would no longer be a building come May 2022 (though I believe as of now, it still is) and began the search for a new home.

  • We managed to find the perfect location in Little River, Miami (thank you so much to everyone who helped make that connection happen and thank you to all the folks at MVW for finding a space for us!)

  • We had some pretty major changes as far as team, offerings, and mission (Welcome to the team Brooke and Amber! Yay memberships! Hurray for a streamlined focus on artists and community!)

  • We moved about 50,000lbs of equipment in 8 26’ box truck loads over 30 miles in less than 30 days (Thank you so much to everyone who helped make this happen, don’t you feel extra strong now?)

  • We managed to reopen the studio in a relatively low key way and have already hosted workshops, resident artists, interns, visiting artists, a mini exhibition, and several private events (and would love to have you, your friends, and anyone you’re trying to impress in the studio, too!)

  • And now here we are, a hurricane for our 8 year anniversary!

We could not have done it without your support and encouragement. We were hoping to have some kind of birthday party but the hurricane really foiled those plans so we’ll have to celebrate in the studio in small bursts, perhaps over a cutting mat or printing press. On that note, how about a studio anniversary workshop sale? Please use the code OMG8YEARS for 15% off any of our upcoming workshops :) (Coupon Valid until October 10th)

Our etching presses are looking good!

KEY HOLDER RESIDENTS

It is our pleasure to welcome to the studio Charlisa Montrope and Nat Sassine as a part of our Special Session Keyholder Residency. The Keyholder Residency provides experienced print and book artists in South Florida with access to our common studio space in exchange for 4 hours of work per week.

Each of these artists will be bringing so much to the studio. They come to us with beautiful ideas and lots of essential skills and knowledge, and we are cooking up some exciting ways for our community to spend some time with them.

If you are interested in learning more about Charlisa and Nat, definitely stay tuned. We are so grateful to be able to say that they will be working with us through January. We can’t wait to see what they make here!

Interested in becoming a Keyholder Resident yourself? The Winter Session is December through February and the deadline to apply is October 15th.

MEET OUR NEW INTERNS

Part of our mission at IS Projects is helping print and book artists to grow, whatever their level of experience. Our internship program has historically been one of our favorite ways to create pathways to new skills for artists in our community. This program is always growing and changing for the better, and if you or anyone you know is interested in getting involved in it, please read about the program on our website and apply before the October 15th deadline.

Meanwhile this fall, we are thrilled to welcome three new interns to the team! They all start this week, and will be with us through December. We can’t wait to see what we’ll learn from each other. If you see them at the studio next time you’re around, be sure to give them a warm hello and to ask them what they’ve been working on.

Keep and eye out for Aliya Gordon, Lorraine Cruz, and Nicholas Waguespack, and click through to see what they’re into!

NEW CLASSES!

The new workshops are here! We are super stoked to have a ton of new workshops to keep you busy until 2023. Whether you’re looking to learn something new or dive deep into something you love, we think you’ll be able to find something to get excited about here. We are particularly thrilled to be offering workshops lead by guest artists we adore: In October, recent Skill Exchange residents Carol Todaro and Lisa Haque will be co-teaching a two day accordion binding intensive, and in December, Gabriela Gamboa will be teaching participants how to plan a photo book. Sign up as soon as you can to secure your seat! If you have any question about our upcoming workshops, please reach out to Brooke Frank via email at brooke@isprojectsfl.com and she will be happy to help.

GOODBYE TO SUMMER

It’s been a wonderful summer here in Miami as we continue to unpack and make this new space our own. We’ve had a lot of exciting projects to keep us busy and a steady stream of inspiring folks have been here learning, working, and exploring the possibilities our studio holds for them. It’s been pure joy getting to share what we do with the print and book lovers around us.

We have especially enjoyed sharing some of our favorite recent prints on our project wall these last few months. Since our grand opening, we have had paintings and prints by the fantastic Tara Booth on display, on loan from our friends at mtn space gallery in Lake Worth, FL. mtn space commissioned us to produce the prints for Tara’s solo exhibition last spring and we’re delighted that our visitors love them as much as we do. All three of the prints are screen printed with between 11 and 13 different layers! They are based on three of her original paintings from a narrative series of paintings she made while in residence at mtn space. If you’d like to see these prints in person and/or acquire one or all, just reach out to us or drop by before September 10 when we will be changing up the wall! Each one is $250 and is signed and editioned by Tara.

This September, we will be closed for two weeks. We will be away from the studio from September 13th-September 24th. Come visit us again on September 27th, if you can’t catch us before our travels!

PREPARING FOR FALL

It may be 90°F today in Miami, but fall is just around the corner, and we are feeling it. For many of you, this means school is back in session. Our beloved summer interns, Veronica Botero and Khanh Ho, have completed their hours and returned to school. Over the course of this summer, they have developed lots of new print and book skills, and were particularly helpful as we cranked out some big screen printing projects. Both of them will be completing their BFAs at Florida Atlantic University in the near future, so if you see them, congratulate them on their great work this summer and wish them luck!

As one thing ends, though, another begins! We will be welcoming many new folks to the studio come September. We have a new crop of interns coming in (keep an eye out for next month’s newsletter to meet them!) and we are also excited to welcome our first two Artists-in-Residence to our new space.

SKILL EXCHANGE RESIDENTS

TIME TO WELCOME SOME ARTISTS WE ADMIRE

We have been offering opportunities for artists to come make their work in our space for nearly as long as we’ve been open, but after the move to Miami, we took some time to rework our programs a little. We now offer four different Artist-in-Residence programs, which you can explore on our website.

We are very excited to announce that we will be welcoming to the studio two artists to make their work here at IS Projects. Carol Todaro and Lisa Haque will be in residence simultaneously for two weeks in the middle of September as a part of our Skill Exchange Residency. Miami-based book/print/paper folks likely already know that both of these artists are as cool as they are creative. They each bring with them a unique wealth of technical knowledge, experience, and beautiful ideas, and we are looking forward to seeing what they create during their time here.

Stay tuned to learn more about these artists! We will be sharing more about their time in residence in the studio in the not-so-distant future.

SEPTEMBER CLASSES

We only have two classes left on the schedule this quarter! Can you believe it? We are beyond excited for both of them. New workshops will be announced in September, so stay tuned!

MEMBERSHIPS

Feeling inspired? Anyone looking to come in and make their own art here could benefit from one of our membership programs. Membership is the only way to rent studio time here, so check out all four of our exciting membership programs here and see what makes the most sense for you! We would love to see you in the studio making your work soon.

A moment from our grand opening

We are in Miami and ready to make art with you!

Time is flying! We can hardly believe it, but our grand opening was nearly a month ago now and we have been busy almost every day since. The phone’s been ringing, the emails have been coming in, and more importantly, there has been plenty of ink on the presses — we are officially back to work! Thank you all for coming in, reaching out, and reading these newsletters as we have been getting back up to speed in our new home. We can’t wait to make prints and books with you.

On that note, we are open to projects of all sorts. Collaborations, publishing of prints and books, and of course, if you want to make your art here, we are ready to sign you up for our new Studio Membership program! There are tons of new ways to get involved in the studio, but our resources are limited, so whatever it is you want to do, reach out as soon as possible to get started and get yourself on the schedule.

FEATURED PRINT PROJECT

MY BODY IS MINE AND MINE ALONE

Printmaking — particularly letterpress — has a long and impossible to ignore role in shaping the political trajectory of this country (really the world, but we’re going to stay local for this description). Today, historical protest posters still influence contemporary design and even fine art printmaking often draws from it’s deeply political roots to engage with modern issues. When the Dobbs decision was announced at the end of June overturning Roe v. Wade we were heartbroken and furious, so we did what we do best in times where we feel silenced: we took out some big old wood type from the Selikoff Collection and got to printing.

We wanted to make a poster that would be at home marching on the streets in protest but could live just as comfortably sparking conversation on a wall in a home or studio. These posters are making their way into the world, declaring the importance of bodily autonomy and consent wherever they wind up. If you or someone you know would like to have one, please get in touch. Instead of selling them, we are offering them in exchange for a direct donation of any amount to Brigid Alliance, Indigenous Women Rising, the ACLU, or Planned Parenthood. Just stop by the studio during our open hours and show us your receipts to pick up your own. If you would like us to ship posters to you and are willing to pay for shipping, please send an email to brooke@isprojectsfl.com to make arrangements.

The posters were printed on pink, blue, white, and grey papers.

SUMMER CLASSES

Take a look at our new offerings below. We have a couple of very exciting classes coming up, including one taught by guest artist Gabriela Gamboa. She will be teaching Mapping Out a Photo Book in August, so we recommend getting yourself registered soon!

MEMBERSHIPS

Finally, if the mention of becoming a studio member piqued your interest, you can click around below to learn about the different programs. Studio membership is now required for anyone hoping to rent studio time here, and each membership program comes with unique benefits which support their different focuses: discounts, members-only opportunities and perks, and of course, a thriving community of other creative people interested in book and printmaking.

After nearly 8 years in downtown Fort Lauderdale, the changes ahead are a tiny bit bitter but really, mostly sweet. If you had asked me in 2020, I would have told you that the little IS Projects caterpillar had already busted out of its cocoon and was flying high. After the last couple of years filled with the most difficult and trying times as a business owner, I have learned that the feeling of comfort that was present in 2020 was just the caterpillar going into the cocoon. The impending move has us feeling like our wings are fully formed, but waiting to spread. The next few weeks of packing and moving nearly 50,000 pounds of equipment will be our struggle to break out so we can finally feel the air and sun again.

Thanks for sticking with me through the butterfly metaphor. All that to say, the next few weeks are going to be some of the most difficult and rewarding in IS Projects’ history and we need your support now more than ever. With many details still to be worked out, this newsletter is vaguer than we had hoped so please keep an eye out for a special newsletter with more announcements about the new address and offerings coming in the next week or so!

In the meantime, we have a bash planned for our last Artwalk this Saturday. It’ll be a disco funeral complete with an artist talk, deep sales on sketchbooks and cards, natural wine, nice tunes, projection mapping, and a studio supply sale complete with paper, presses, and furniture in need of new homes. It would mean the world to see you for our last hurrah in Fort Lauderdale. We’ll be here 2pm to 10pm so there’s plenty of time to come say hi and show us some love. Lots more details on the specifics below so I’ll stop here. If you made it this far, thank you, and hope to see you soon! - Ingrid and the ISP Team

DON’T MISS THE SHOW

Land of Sunshine by Angelica Clyman

Saturday, April 30th
Closing Reception, 6-10PM
with an Artist Talk at 7PM

Land of Sunshine offers a view of South Florida that is at once sentimental and apocalyptic, real and imagined, comforting and ominous. The exhibition features the work of Angelica Clyman, a painter and sculptor who is heavily influenced by growing up in Broward County, and the accelerated changes it has and continues to experience. Her work deals with a search for home in a place that no longer exists in the same form, and a fascination with structures, aesthetics, and commercial enterprises that have been dethroned with time. Land of Sunshine consists of oil paintings accented with sculptural elements and found objects that reinforce the fractured world existing in Clyman’s painted landscapes.

Angelica Clyman is a painter and sculptor who lives and works in her native South Florida. She is a graduate of New World School of the Arts (BFA) and Florida International University (MFA). Her passion for discovering and preserving the history of seemingly mundane local spaces makes every day a possible revelation and adventure. She currently teaches studio art at Broward College and is the director of the Rosemary Duffy Larson Gallery.

DON’T MISS THE TALK

In Conversation: John Cutrone, Gabriela Gamboa and Ingrid Schindall on Artist Books
Tuesday, May 10th at 6:30PM over Zoom

Join Bakehouse artist Gabriela Gamboa, as she speaks with John Cutrone, Director of the Jaffe Center for Book Arts at Florida Atlantic University Libraries, and Ingrid Schindall, Director of IS Projects, about her most recent artist book, A Study of Dust. Exploring the alienation and disorientation that she experienced as a result of living in exile and exacerbated by the pandemic, Gamboa documented the spaces and objects she left behind. A Study of Dust is a compilation of these images, an easily transportable object that becomes a receptacle of memory and loss, as the artist navigates (un)belonging in a foreign country.

In a conversation moderated by Bakehouse’s Curatorial + Public Programs Manager, Laura Novoa, Gamboa, Cutrone and Schindall speak about the particularities of producing and the importance of collecting artist books and their potential as an accessible and democratic medium.

This program is presented in partnership with IS Projects and the Jaffe Center for Book Arts at Florida Atlantic University.

Congrats to the Bride and Groom!

We’re so grateful to have seen no shortage of projects coming through the studio this month! In between painstakingly separating files for screen printing, color matching, and getting stationery projects out the door, owner and founder, Ingrid Schindall, has been putting final touches on her own wedding; set for this coming Tuesday, the 22nd! Naturally, Ingrid designed and printed her own stunning and playfully colorful Key Largo-inspired wedding suite - sure to make a splash on the Nocturnal Press Instagram and website very soon.

The IS Projects team wants to wish Ingrid and Johnny Zhang, IS Project’s go-to photographer and videographer extraordinaire, the best on this new exciting chapter of their lives. Johnny has been diligently working behind the scenes for years now, filming our virtual workshops and virtual gallery tours at the height of the pandemic, documenting Ingrid’s independent projects, and leveling up our website and marketing photos. Expect to see many more collaborations between these two over the coming years!

With that said, we will be closed Tuesday, February 22nd and Wednesday February 23rd and will resume normal hours the 24th. As our big move approaches, we cannot take on any more book or screenprinting projects until we get settled. We still have limited availability for letterpress projects and assisted studio time so be sure to reach out with those inquires as soon as possible.

It’s hard to believe we only have another month of classes at this address! Check out our class discount and offerings below.

Lexicon of Longing by Golnar Adili
On View Until March 1, 2022
Closing Reception: Feb 26th, 6-10pm

Lexicon of Longing is a solo exhibition of artists' books and prints by Golnar Adili which grapple with deconstructing and reconstructing past traumas. Born in Virginia to activist parents fighting against the shah, Adili’s family migrated to Iran in the wake of the revolution. Growing up in post-1979 Tehran, in the face of seismic geopolitical shifts, Adili experienced uprooting and disconnection. Only two years after their resettlement in Iran, Iraq’s sudden attack on Iran tightened the Islamic Republic’s grip on any political opposition, catalyzing Adili’s father’s eventual escape back to the United States. Adili’s father was never able to return. This separation split Adili’s family for many years, ending only when she moved to the states to attend college. In her work, Adili is compelled to decode the ways in which these events have marked her.

As a visual thinker, Adili is interested in learning through comparison; making connections between similar shapes and events from varied contexts as the foundation upon which she builds her vast internal library of the world. Inspired by how her own child observes and archives information, Adili has infused her practice with play, using family photographs and language to reshape memory, experiences of displacement and identity. Forgetting and relearning both English and Persian multiple times has made language a fascinating reference in Adili's work. Persian poetry, as well as biographical text investigating a landscape of longing, have provided a valuable context for examining language formally. These investigations include physically building words and letters with a multitude of materials. In doing so, Adili uses architecture, book arts, and installation to distort and blur the lines between design, craft, and fine art.

Golnar Adili is a mixed media artist, educator, and designer with a focus on diasporic identity. She holds a master's degree in architecture from the University of Michigan and has attended residencies at the Rockefeller Foundation for the Arts (Bellagio, Italy), Center for Book Arts (NYC), Smack Mellon (Brooklyn, NY), Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown (MA), MacDowell Colony (NYC), Ucross Foundation for the Arts (Clearmont, WY), Lower East Side Printshop (NYC), Women’s Studio Workshop (Rosendale, NY), and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Workspace (NYC), among others. Adili has shown her work internationally; venues include: the Victoria and Albert Museum (London, UK), NURTUREart (Brooklyn, NY), Craft and Folk Art Museum (Los Angeles, CA), and International Print Center New York (NYC). She has received several grants, including the Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant, NYFA Fellowship in Printmaking/Drawing/Artists Books, and the Jerome Hill Finalist Grant. Adili is a Jameel Prize finalist. Her artist books are in several collections, including the Library of Congress, Rutgers University, Yale University, and University of Michigan.

What a year!

2021 has been a year of growth, challenges, and dreaming about a future where we can all get together and get inky again. We’ve worked on big projects, made new friends, stretched our curatorial muscles, spent more time on Zoom than we would have ever predicted, found our favorite brand of n95 masks, got some bad news, got some great news and slowly but surely are making a plan for a new home.
