December Class Newsletter

December is a time for reflection and, after over a year of being closed to the public, we’re feeling incredibly thankful for all the new connections we’ve made with local artists and the familiar faces that continue to visit the studio since restarting classes this Summer. If you’re looking to get more involved at the studio, be sure to check the website for our newly released winter schedule and visit the studio to pick up a winter flyer! We’ve developed some exciting new offerings including multi-week courses in Photographic Print Techniques, Intro to Bookbinding, Portfolio Review, and Intro to Artists’ Books.

What We’ve Been Up To This Month

While certain techniques don’t always make it to the calendar as often others, we always have the option for a group of interested participants to schedule a private class. Here’s some shots from last month’s private collagraph class we ran for a group of artists!

We have loved partnering with our neighbors, Small Wine Shop, on a monthly series of Drink and Ink Date Night classes that pair natural wine tasting with printmaking techniques. This month we held a simple bookbinding class at Small Wine Shop!

The biggest class highlight from this month was hands-down David Wolske’s Isotype printing class. The class kicked off a week-long residency for David, who is visiting from Texas. We cannot thank David enough for being so generous in sharing this technique with us.

Pastel Transfers for Monoprinting

Saturday, January 15th, 10am - 4pm
What happens when you run a pastel drawing through an etching press? Magic! Images transform and soften as they are run through the press multiple times. In this workshop we will use pastel drawings as the basis for monotype prints. This is a versatile technique that is great for monotype, for applying areas of color to a print without opening messy cans of ink and for creating soft, subtle ghost prints. It yields vibrant color on its own, and can be combined with many other printmaking techniques such as Solarplate, collograph, copper etching, woodcut, etc. to create rich layered prints.

TOM PAULIUS

TD (Tom) Paulius is a printmaker from Orland Park, Illinois. Tom creates prints in various media, including woodcuts, linocuts, screenprints, etchings, polyplate lithographs and solar plate photogravures. His solar plates prints focus on seascapes and nature, using photographs taken along the coast, the Keys, the Everglades and Big Cypress swamp.

Photo Etching: Solar Plates

Saturday, January 22nd 10am - 4pm
Learn the basics of photogravure printmaking using solar plates. In this course, you will learn how to use the solar plate process for non-toxic photogravure printmaking. Students will learn what a solar plate is and how to prepare images to create a positive that is exposed onto the photosensitive polymer coating of a solar plate. They will develop their exposed plates in water to create photogravure plates in which the images are etched into the photopolymer on the plate. Students will walk away with a small edition of original prints.
