Private Instruction: Drypoint

from $300.00

Class Length: 4 Hours per session

Up to 4 participants welcome

Together with the assistance of an IS Projects collaborator, participants with any level of experience will be guided through the process of making a print from a plexiglass drypoint plate. Drypoint is a type of intaglio printmaking. In intaglio prints (like drypoint and etching) lines and textures are incised into the surface of your plate, and ink is wiped into those lowered areas before printing. During printing, your paper pulls ink out of the lowered areas of your plate. In a drypoint print, you scratch lines directly into the surface of your plate. This process requires patience and attention to detail, and is excellent for folks who love to draw.

Preparing to print is just as involved as printing itself, so we offer the following options:

  • The Fundamentals: 1 four hour session. You will learn how to prepare your plexi plate, develop your image, set pressure on the etching press, wipe ink into your plate, and proof your plate. You will not walk away with an edition of identical prints, but will likely have a few great prints to take home. This crash course is focused on teaching you the foundational skills you need in order to make intaglio prints.

  • Printing only: 1 four hour session. You already have your intaglio plate ready to print. This session will cover wiping your plate, proofing, troubleshooting your printing, and signing and editioning your prints. Whether or not you walk out with an edition of identical prints will vary based on the difficulty of printing your specific image, as pulling each print is a very complex process in intaglio, and consequently, difficult to replicate perfectly. You will absolutely leave with a bunch of prints, and can easily experiment to produce a varied edition. You can purchase additional printing-only sessions if you want more time to produce an edition, or you can explore studio membership.

  • Both: 2 four hour sessions (8 hours total) Session 1 is the fundamentals, Session 2 is all about printing. Trust us, you can never have too much time to print intaglio.

Scheduling: We are a small and busy team, but we are as flexible as we can be! We typically schedule Private Instruction during our 11AM-7PM business hours, Tuesday-Friday. Weekend and after-hours appointments can sometimes be arranged, though.

It is easiest to accommodate requests with at least 2 weeks advanced notice, but we can sometimes make it work short notice. After receiving your order, we will reach out to you via email to schedule your workshop.

If you have very specific scheduling needs which will determine whether or not this will work for you, please feel free to reach out to brooke@isprojectsfl.com to confirm that we can meet them. Examples of such needs would be: Short notice scheduling, a swiftly approaching deadline, planning the workshop to occur on one specific date like a birthday.

Please review our FAQ for more information about our policies and what you can expect.
