Print with Tom Virgin: Linocut on the Vandercook

from $25.00

Instructor: Tom Virgin of Extra Virgin Press

May 1, 2025, 6-9PM

We are excited to announce that we will be hosting a series of guest workshops in print with Tom Virgin of Extra Virgin Press. Each workshop will focus on a different way to make prints using one of the Vandercook Proofing Presses here at Miami Paper & Printing Museum.

This week, participants will learn how to print carved linoleum blocks on the Vandercook. Tom will have a number of pre-carved blocks available to print from so that participants can focus on using the equipment, but participants are welcome to purchase linoleum to carve or to bring their own pre-carved lino block*.

Folks with prior letterpress experience who would like to come work independently on their own project during the workshop are also welcome to sign up.

*In order to print a carved linoleum block on the Vandercook during the workshop, it will need to meet certain size constraints. Lino blocks should be 4×6” or smaller, and should be on mounted linoleum. The Vandercook pressure is time consuming to adjust and will be set up for printing store-bought mounted linoleum. If your block is too high or too low by even a little bit, it may not be possible to print it during the workshop, but the skills learned in the workshop may be applicable for printing your block later.

Sliding Scale Pricing: Transparency Statement

We are piloting a new sliding scale model for pricing our classes.

The full cost for us to host this class is $1100. If we make $1100 on this class we do not make a profit, we just cover our costs. These costs include studio space, tools, equipment, staff labor and materials.

Implementing a sliding scale model is part of our goal to make our classes accessible to a broader range of folks while also making sure that we are able to financially sustain the studio space. The graphic below provides context to help you decide which pricing tier you register under. In the drop down cost menu you will be able to register for the class at the tier that makes the most sense for your circumstances. If you are able, we welcome you to purchase register for multiple tiers as a way to invest in the continued existence and ongoing work of our space.

Cost

Tier 5 - Sustain our Studio

$1000 - Cover the costs for the entire fully-enrolled workshop. If you cover the costs for this workshop, any registration fees that others pay will go towards subsidizing the cost of future workshops.

Tier 4 - Support ongoing programming

$200 - Pay full price for you and an additional person in a class of ten. You are welcome to purchase additional seats as well!

Tier 3 - Cover our costs

$100 -  Cover the cost for one person in a class of ten

Tier 2 - Meet us in the middle

$50 - 50% of the cost for one person in a class of ten

Tier 1 - Scholarship Rate

$25 - 25% of the cost for one person in a class of ten
