Visiting Instructor: Merike Van Zanten

This workshop explores the unique process of Eco-printing on paper! Eco-printing uses the shapes, colors, and marks left by plants, leaves and flowers. Each participants will get to explore color and pattern in this experimental approach to dyeing. We will be discussing types of papers suitable for eco printing, and types of mordants needed, as well as possible modifiers. Then we will begin laying out our plant material on the paper and talk about folding methods and different methods of securing bundles. Each student will go home with a selection of printed papers and the knowledge to continue this at home!

Merike Van Zanten is Jaffe Center for Book Art's current Salzberg Artist in Residence visiting from the Netherlands. Merike specializes in ecoprinting, a technique of extracting color and images from plants and metals through steam. Merike’s art is wide-ranging but focuses on hand papermaking and artists’ books incorporating found materials.
