It is what you make of it. is an artist book in the form of a set of 7 postcards. The title implies the theme of the writing throughout the book, that life is what you make of it, as well as the physicality of the book, that how the viewer chooses to make use of the book determines it's function (keep the set together, send them out to friends, or frame them, etc.) The photographs were taken by the artist over the last 5 years in different places around the world. The sentences were hand set in lead type and paired with a vintage mathematical diagram block and letterpress printed onto the photograph.

I have been developing these sentences since 2011, they were first conveyed as guerilla signs placed throughout Baltimore for individuals to discover on their own.

They were also presented as large fine art prints to be framed and displayed. Neither of these outcomes felt resolved and I knew that the sentences needed another outlet.

So I set my heart on putting them into an artist book: something short and abstract with big pictures. But the sentences broke free of their sequence. No matter how hard I tried to force them into book form it was clear that they needed to be separated from each other and not besieging the viewer with everything at once.

The title “It is what you make of it.” refers to the overall theme of the sentences, that, it’s all a matter of perception and simple observations can help you make “it” (whatever it may be) better.

The title also challenges the viewer to physically make something of it, whether the postcards are sent out to old friends or framed and displayed, it begs its viewer for participation.
